Fit to Be Tied! Academy and Maine Sting Draw Again

July 3, 2009, Bangor, Maine-Playing with a depleted roster because of injuries, the Long Island Academy went to Bangor, Maine with just 11 players and no substitutes and tied the Maine Sting, 0-0. The two National Premier Soccer League teams had drawn, 2-2, on June 11 at Adelphi University.

Long Island is now 3-0-2 and Maine is 3-2-3 in the Atlantic Conference.

Academy coach Adrian Gaitan, at 40 years old, came out of retirement to play the full 90 minutes. Long Island keeper Hernando Santamaria made three saves to record the shut out.

"The boys played well," commented Coach Gaitan. "We kept the ball a lot and countered when we had to. We had the better chances to score."

The Academy return to action this Wednesday, July 8 at the 2-4-0 Morris County Colonials in New Jersey. Long Island had defeated Morris County, 3-1, at Adelphi on June 24.

Meanwhile, the women's team, the 7-0-1 Long Island Fury, play that night at the 6-1-0 Adirondack Lynx.
