A Lost Evening as Both the Fury and Academy Are Defeated
There was no joy on Long Island as both the Fury and Academy lost their games on Saturday night, June 12.
The undefeated Lancaster Inferno topped the Long Island Fury, 1-0, tonight at Mitchel Athletic Complex on a sensational 25-yard goal from Casey Boyer. In the Women’s Premier Soccer League standings, Lancaster is 3-0-2 while Long Island drops to 3-2-0.
The first half was a midfield battle but both teams came out of the locker rooms attacking in the second half. The Fury’s Charlotte Miller had a breakaway in the 51st minute with her shot going just wide of the net. Fury keeper Brittany Anghel of East Meadow made a point-blank save of Katie Lamm in the 74th minute. But Anghel or no other goalkeeper could have stopped Boyer’s strike in the 79th minute.
In the dying minutes, Devin Pendergast of Babylon made two piercing dribbles along the goal line but the Fury still were shut out.
Brittany Anghel made five saves while her counterpart, Lancaster keeper Amanda McGowen, made three saves. Lancaster had a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
“We had no dynamic play upfront,” lamented Fury head coach Michael Demakis.
Things were not any better in Brooklyn. In a match at Aviator Field, the Brooklyn Italians defeated the Long Island Academy, 6-1. Brooklyn is now 4-0-1 in the National Premier Soccer League standings while the Academy drop to 1-3-0.
The Academy return to action with a 6 pm National Premier Soccer League encounter on Tuesday, June 15 with the Red Bulls at Adelphi University. The next night, Wednesday, June 16, the Fury have a 7 pm kick-off at Adelphi against the New York Athletic Club.
